Edo nursing students protest new principal's appointment, lock out staff, visitors

By OLALEKAN BADMOS
Academic and social activities were paralysed at the Edo State School of Nursing on Thursday as students of the institution barred teachers, other staff and visitors to the school from entering the premises.
The students, who were protesting the appointment of a new principal for the school from among the tutors of the School of Midwifery, carried placards to convey their grievances, vowing to continue the action until their demands are met.
The handing over ceremony between the retiring Principal and the incoming, scheduled for Thursday was disrupted by the students’ protest.
According to the institution’s Students’ Union president, Anyanbu Johnson, the students are rejecting the new principal because she does not have what it takes to hold the office.
“Our grievance is that Mrs. Osazuwa (the new principal) does not have the criteria to be our principal. Nursing and Midwery Council stipulates that the principal of nursing school must be a nursing tutor and not a midwife tutor.
"We are saying no to the appointment of a midwife. She has been the principal of School of Midwifery and the school has not been accredited for the past three years. There are only two students in the school of midwifery. Our school was also not accredited. We want to speak with the government on this matter. We have qualified lecturers in our school that the government should appoint and not from Midwifery that is a specialty under Nursing," he said.
The state Commissioner for Health, Aihanuwa Heregie, could not be reached for comments.
However, a source in the ministry confided in WITNESS NIGERIA that the government only appointed Mrs. Osazuwa in acting capacity, pending the appointment of a substantive principal for the school.
