The Edo state Police command said it has gunned down two suspected
kidnappers in Benin in a foiled attempt to abduct a pregnant woman,
Mrs. Ehi.
The suspects, identified as Brown Ogunbor and Monday Mark,
reportedly met their waterloo at Evbomoma road, off Sapele Road of the city
after abducting the woman believed to be from a wealthy family.
Sources said operatives of the anti-kidnapping unit of the
state Police Command, who had earlier been hinted of the kidnap operation,
stormed the scene and engaged the
kidnappers in a shoot-out before the victim was eventually rescued.
Two of the suspects died at the spot while one was picked
alive with severe bullet wounds.
Items recovered from them include one pump action gun, one
double barrel cut to size, ten live cartridges, one Nissan Sunny Saloon car
with registration number CU 835 JJJ and a Santana saloon car with registration
number AA 908 DEA.
The third suspect, who confessed to journalists, said
someone from the prison called him on phone to partake in the kidnap operation.
While displaying the bodies of the dead kidnap suspects on Wednesday,
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, vowed to crack down on “the
remnants of kidnappers still operating in the state”.
“Yesterday (Tuesday) at about 10pm, based on the information
we got that some deadly group of kidnappers are about to kidnap one Mrs Ehi,
our anti kidnapping squad laid siege in the area by Sapele Road.
“Our men swung into action and there was a shootout. Two of
them were shot dead while one is still alive. I want to sound this warning
again that the remnants of kidnapping gangs that are still kidnapping here in
Edo state should either repent or leave the state.
"Like I said earlier, this 2014 will be too hot for
them and other criminals. We recovered one automatic pump action gun, one
double barrel with ten rounds of ammunition and two vehicles from them. These
people are deadly and we must not condone them in the society”, he said.
