A young man believed to be in his mid-30s, Abdul-Kareem
Olalere, stunned people around the Mokola Round-About area, Ibadan on Tuesday,
when he jumped over the flyover bridge commissioned by the state government
last year, to escape robbery attack.
Olalere, a principal
agent at Premier Lotto Company, was protecting a sum of N300,000 he just
withdrew from a commercial bank in the ancient city, but got his left hand
broken in the process.
According to him, he had noticed that the two suspected
robbers were trailing him as soon as his motorcycle was ascending the Mokola
flyover.
"I told the bike man to move faster when I noticed they
were trailing but he was afraid, so I had to stop him immediately. When I saw one
of them trying to bring out a gun to rob me, I quickly threw down the money and
jumped after it," he said.
The scene witnessed mammoth crowd as people took his action
for a suicide mission. A government ambulance later arrived the scene to take
him to an hospital for medical attention.
While speaking with journalists at the hospital, some of his
relations said the money was still intact as a police officer helped him to
pick it and gave to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Mokola Police
office.
Police authorities could not officially comment on the
incident.
When the DPO was called, he declined comments, saying he did
not have the authority to speak. He, however, directed journalists to the state
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, who neither
picked call when attempt was made to talk to her.
