The Oyo Police Commissioner, Mohammed Indabawa, said on Monday
that the command would recover the rifles taken from two policemen killed at a
robbery attack on The Vine Branch Church in Ibadan on Sunday.
Indabawa, who addressed a press conference at the command's
headquarters, Eleyele, said his men were still working hard to ensure that the
robbery suspects were arrested and the arms taken from the slain police
officers recovered soon.
"As you are well aware, the robbers took away the guns of the policemen they killed. We are on the case, we are going to track them down and we are going to recover our arms from them," he said.
The gang had stormed the church’s premises while the service
was going on last Sunday.
After pretending to be part of the congregation for a while,
they unveiled their mission immediately after the offerings and tithes were
taken.
Though their attempt to cart away the money failed, they
killed the two cops, who came with the bullion van brought by a commercial bank
to take the money away.
The police commissioner confirmed the genuineness of the police
victims, but refused to disclose their identity, saying such would be
irresponsible and hurtful since their families were yet to be briefed on the
development.
The church pastor, Sola Kolade, refused to speak with
journalists on the incident. Some of his aides, who attended to reporters, said
he had barred the press from further coverage of the church, adding that he would
address journalists soon.
