One feared dead as UNIBEN screens new intakes

By OLALEKAN BADMOS
One person was feared dead and several others injured as the University of Benin screened its new intakes on Wednesday.
The incident was coming barely a fortnight after dozens of youth were killed in stampede during a recruitment exercise for the Nigerian Immigration Services held at designated centres across the country.
Eyewitness to the UNIBEN’s incident told WITNESS NIGERIA that attempt by security personnel of the university to control the large crowd of candidates scrambling to get screened at the same time led to stampede which has allegedly claimed a life.
“The guys were trying to shut the gate of the screening venue against them to prevent the surge. Some fell in the process and those still finding their feet marched on them.
“It was a terrible thing and so serious. It began when the students were attempting to enter into the hall and the security men said no. It was then that some of the students attempted to force their way into the place and the security men forcefully closed the gates on them. That is how hundreds of them fell.
"Those who got up marched on those still on the ground to get out of the confusion, the source said.
The University's Public Relations Officer, Harrison Osarenren, could not be reached for comments as his phones were switched off.
