In fulfillment of his earlier promise to the Olubadan of Ibadanland,
Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1, President Goodluck Jonathan was at the Monatan
Palace of the monarch on Tuesday to cut the centenary cake with him and the
family.
The President was billed to join well-wishers at St. Peter’s
Cathedral, Aremo where a thanksgiving service was held on Monday to mark
Olubadan’s 100 years birthday. He, however, cancelled the trip due to an early
hour bomb explosion which claimed scores of lives and injured many others at Nyanya Motor park, Abuja.
While describing the Olubadan as a
unique person, Jonathan recalled that he made a promise to attend the 100th year birthday when he came to Ibadan to rejoice with him on his 99th birthday celebration last year.
According to the President, the Olubadan was lucky because
not many people born the year the Northern and Southern Protectorate was amalgamated to form the current Nigeria were still alive to witness the centenary celebration.
He said though he had sent his aides to represent him at the church
service on Monday, he still considered it important to come personally to felicitate
with Oba Odulana.
Jonathan, who was accompanied to the palace by the Senate
President, David Mark; Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioa;
Deputy Senate Whip, Hosea Agboola; National chairman of the Peoples Democratic
Party, Adamu Muazu; governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi; his predecessor, Adebayo Alao-Akala' and other big wigs, said he was happy to be part
of the celebration.
He attributed the Olubadan’s long life to his good character,
honesty and impeccable record of service.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Otun Olubadan, Omowale
Kuye, who spoke on behalf of the celebrant (Olubadan) and the palace, thanked
the President for the visit.
He also praised him for instituting the ongoing National
Conference, saying it is what the country needs presently.
