Edo government, officials charged with contempt

By OLALEKAN BADMOS
The Edo state chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has filed a contempt charge against the state government and some of its officials over the competency test held for teachers in the state recently.
According to the counsel to ASUSS, Olayiwola Afolabi, the union is filing the suit to challenge the government’s alleged disobedience to an order issued by the President of the National Industrial Court, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, restraining it from conducting the test.
The lawyer said the court had served Form 48 on some of the officials of the state to restrict them as officials of the state from going ahead with the test, but still acted in the contrary.
The affected officials include the chairman of the committee in charge of the competency test, Prof. Dennis Agbonlahor; state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice; Commissioner for Higher Education and Commissioner for Basic Education.
Others are the state’s Head of Service, Head of Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA); Permanent Secretary, Post Primary Education Board and Mrs. I. J. Iyamu of Post Primary Education Board.
Afolabi added that the court also ordered that the status quo ante be maintained pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice before assigning it to Justice Auwal Irahim of the Enugu Division for determination.
