Following last year’s death of former Deji of Akure, Oba
Adebiyi Adesida, six persons from the Osupa Ruling House of the town now jostle
to occupy the vacant seat.
Safe for the deposed Adesina Adepoju’s stint on the throne,
the deceased monarch’s lineage, Adesida, had consistently occupied the seat for
over 100 years, at the expense of other royal houses.
The six princes, who have already notified the leadership of
the ruling house of their ambition in writing, include Kole Aladetoyinbo, a
United State of America (USA)-based businessman, Kayode Oke Adegite, an
Akure-based businessman and Oluwole Ogunsuyi, a Commissioner in the Ondo State
Judicial Commission.
Others are Femi Adejuyigbe, an Akure Saw-miller; Leye Alabi,
a retired Air Commodore and businessman; and Kayode Oluwole Abewajoye, who is a
popular presenter with the state-owned television outfit, Ondo State Radio-vision
Corporation (OSRC).
The ruling house has, however, appealed to all who aspire to
wear the crown, to abide by the traditions and cultures of the people so that
the status of the monarchy is not diminished.
In a release jointly signed by Dr. Adebimpe Ige Ogunleye and
Adebayo Adeleye, the Chairman and Secretary of the ruling house respectively,
the leadership also appealed to “all Osupa sons and daughters to allow peace to
reign and shun any act capable of denting the image of our house.”
According to the release, a committee headed by former
Secretary to the Federal Government and Afenifere chieftain, Olu Falae, himself
an Osupa Prince, has been put in place “to settle any grievances from dissident
group and those who may be planning to disintegrate.”
Other members of the committee include former Ondo
Information Commissioner, Olu Adegboro, Adeuya Oluwatuyi, Kayode Ajomale,
Adebanjo Adeleye and two others.
