The Oyo state Correspondents’ chapel of the Nigerian Union
of Journalists, NUJ, on Wednesday appointed a 5-member committee to conduct an
election for a new executive committee.
Before the new team, led by Olaide Oyelude of Daily
Newswatch, was appointed, two other committees had attempted midwifing a new
executive committee for the chapel without a success.
The chapel was to have changed leadership since June last
year, but squabbles among members had practically made it impossible.
To halt the ugly trend, the National Secretariat of the
union, through a letter by the Senior Assistant National Secretary, Gbemiga
Bamidele, dated 14th March this year, directed that a new screening/credentials
committee be set up to conduct fresh election.
In the letter with Reference No:NUJ/NS SC 82/Vol VI/1/3/14
which was addressed to the Chairman/Secretary of the State Council, but copied
the incumbent leadership of the chapel, the new committee was admonished to
comport within the ambit of the NUJ Constitution.
Apart from Oyelude, the transition team also has Yinka
Bode-Are (News Agency of Nigeria), Yinka Fabowale (Southwest Bureau Chief of
The Sun), Felix Ademola (This Day) and Femi Ilesanmi (The Nation) as members.
While inaugurating the committee, Bisi Oladele, the outgoing
chairman, charged members to be committed to the spirit and letter of the
constitution of the union and comply by the directive of the national body to
ensure a free, fair and credible election.
Members of the chapel, who spoke at the meeting commended
both the National Secretariat and the State Council for their timely
intervention and pledged their cooperation in bringing about rancor-free election
within the shortest possible time.
Oyelude, who responded on behalf of the committee, thanked members
of the chapel for the confidence reposed in him and others elected into the
committee and maintained that the committee would swing into action immediately
and ensure that the election is conducted as soon as possible.
