President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of
the leadership of the National Conference.
A statement on Monday night by the Secretary to the
Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, named a former Chief Justice of
Nigeria, Jutice Idris Kutigi , as the Chairman.
Others are a former Minister of External Affairs, Prof.
Bolaji Akinyemi (Vice Chairman), and wife of the Director-General of
Nigerian Institute for Advanced Legal Studies,
Dr. Valerie Azinge (Secretary).
The appointees are to resume on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 in
Abuja and would be received on arrival by the SGF.
The Federal Government had, in releasing the modalities for
nominations for the proposed National Conference, said the conference is
expected to hold at the Federal Capital Territory and is expected to last for
three months.
According to Anyim, a total of 492 nominees are expected to
participate in the conference.
He stated that where consensus was not achievable, it shall
be by 75 per cent majority.
Anyim said after the session, the conference itself would
advise the government on the legal framework, legal procedures and options for
integrating the decisions and outcomes of the national conference into the constitution
and laws of the country.
The SGF had stated that the conference shall discuss any
subject matter, except the indivisibility and indissolubility of Nigeria as a
nation, adding that the unity of Nigeria was non-negotiable.
