The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Zone - B has
condemned in strong terms the manhandling of two of its members in Ado Ekiti, the
Ekiti State capital.
In a statement issued in Akure by the Zone B Vice President of the union, Dele Atunbi, the NUJ described the attack on
its members covering the PDP Secretariat gutted by fire in Ado-Ekiti as debasing and
dehumanising.
The union frowns at a development where thugs have
constituted themselves to lords in Ekiti State under a democratically elected
government.
While stating emphatically that journalists in any parts of
the country will not be intimated in carrying out their constitutional
responsibilities, the union challenges the Ekiti State Government to be up and
doing in protecting the lives of the people.
The NUJ calls on the Nigeria Police Ekiti State Command to
go all out and fish out the perpetrators of this dastardly act and bring them
to justice.
The union is alarmed by this development due to the
forthcoming governorship election in Ekiti State which is just three months
away.
It admonishes all security outfits in Ekiti State to provide
watertight security for all citizens as the state prepares for its
gubernatorial election.
While the union remains apolitical, it advices the political
gladiators in the state to play the game according to the rules by respecting
the rule of law.
