Bauchi govt. finds 4,485 unqualified teachers in payroll -- SUBEB Chairman

The Bauchi State Government has uncovered no fewer than 4,485 teachers not possessing the minimum qualification of Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) to teach in primary schools on its payroll.

The Chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Abdullahi Dabo, said this on Wednesday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi.
“We have 4,485 teachers who have not yet obtained NCE qualification in Bauchi State and they are on the payroll of the board up till now.
“Previously, we discovered many of our teachers lacking the abilities to deliver good lessons to our pupils in the primary schools.
“We in fact had to make sure that we give these children their own legitimate entitlements because they are entitled to be taught.
“There are some who are in possession of these qualifications but the qualifications were not obtained through the legitimate process; some certificates were obtained by proxy, others were bought.
“I believe some of the teachers bribed their instructors so that they can be given these NCE certificates; they couldn't defend the certificates.
Dabo said that in the process of screening the affected teachers, some resorted to violence while others fled.
“We in fact insisted we must screen them. In the process of trying to screen them, some of them wanted to resort to violence.
“That attracted the attention of the governor. So he inaugurated a committee to screen all these teachers.
“When they were at the last stages of the screening at the Teachers’ Service Commission, many were given proficiency tests prepared from the instruments on primary four textbooks, yet many of these teachers failed.
“And they were given a second chance to sit for the examination. Still these teachers could not measure up.
“I cannot imagine what kind of training that will groom these teachers to be useful teachers. It is something difficult.”
