Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University are in for a good
one as a part four law student of the institution, Abimbola Amusan, has organised a beauty
pageant; Most Beautiful Girl in OAU (MBGO) to empower the beautiful and
brilliant girls among them.
In a chat with WITNESS NIGERIA, Amusan revealed the MBGO is a
top-notch, value-driven and a rewarding pageantry specifically organised to
appreciate naturally endowed young female talents within OAU.
MBGO is the second beauty pageant taking place within the
university’s shores after the MISS OAU pageant which came up last year.
"The difference between MBGO and Miss OAU is similar to
that between MBGN (Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria) and Miss Nigeria,"
Abimbola who is also a photographer explained.
He said that the pageant is also aimed at empowering female
undergraduates who are not only "physically dazzling but are a unique
compendium of admirable qualities necessary for strategic personal development,
community service and nation building at large".
Saying that the prizes for the winners are not just compelling
but also life-changing, he said "the winner will enjoy a week trip to
Dubai, get a Nokia Lumia, represent OAU as beauty ambassador for a year,
wardrobe allowance, sign a one-year modeling contract, get make-up supply, body
accessories supply as well as hair-product supply".
"The first runner-up", he went further, "gets
a new laptop, signs a year modeling contract, goes home with a new Nokia Lumia,
gets a ticket to participate in the Miss Osun 2014 contest, gets make-up supply
for a year, hair-product supply for a year and also body accessories supply for
a year" while the second runner up gets a "Nokia Lumia, a year modeling
contract, a ticket to participate in the Miss Osun 2014 contest, a year make-up
supply, 1 year hair product supply, and a cash prize".
On the processes that would be followed in the MBGO 2014,
Amusan said many participants have applied and the casting took place last Saturday
at Spring hills, New Buka, at OAU.
Dressed in tank tops, leggings with high heel shoes to
match, the contestants filed out one after the other, facing a 6-man panel
which consisted of seasoned professionals from the fashion, beauty and modeling
worlds. The session which lasted over five hours, according to Amusan, would
have a good number of them would make it to the next stage of the competition.
Also speaking on sponsorship, he disclosed that with
substantial endorsements of leading brands in the Nigerian fashion, media and
telecommunication industries, the MBGO Pageant has come to stay, describing it as
next big thing to happen to the Nigerian fashion industry.
He allays the fears of contestants on contentious issues like sexual harassment
and other negative tendencies that characterize similar contests, saying
measure are in place to forestall such occurrences.
"Though, that is usually the norm in most pageantry,
MBGO has however come around to make a difference. We are working on absolute
fairness and a level playing ground for all contestants, nothing more is
attached! We have turned down so many offers already and we are still doing
that,” he said.
