A 49-year-old man believed to be a Prince of Efon-Alaye in
Ekiti state, Adebayo Yusuf Aladegbemi, was on Monday docked at an Iyaganku
Chief Magistrate's Court, in Ibadan.
He was arraigned before Magistrate Durosaro Tijani on
four-count charge of falsification of land documents and obtaining money
through false pretence.
According to the charge sheet, Aladegbemi allegedly
fraudulently collected a total of N10 million from Mr. Taofik Oladipupo Odukoya
between December 2013 and January 2014 as cost of a piece of land at Kolapo
Ishola GRA, Iwo Road, which does not belong to him.
"That you Prince Adebayo Yusuf Aladegbemi 'M' at the
aforementioned place, date and Magisterial District did fraudulently take and
convert to your use, a sum of Ten Million Naira (N10,000,000.00), the property
of Mr. Taofik Oladipupo Odukoya and thereby committed an offence contrary to
Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 38,
Vol. II Laws of Oyo State 2000," the first count of the charge read.
The accused person was also said to have forged documents
purportedly from the Oyo state registry as 'proof' to authenticate the deal.
The victim's lawyer, Waheed Lawal, had earlier written a
petition to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone II to
report the alleged fraud.
Dated 27 January, 2014, the letter detailed how they
discovered that the C of O issued them was forged when they got to the land
where the original owner was already mobilizing people for work.
The AIG was urged in the petition to investigate and ensure
that the culprits in the deal were duly prosecuted.
When the charges were read to Aladegbemi on Monday, he
pleaded not guilty to all.
The presiding Magistrate granted him bail with N5 million
and two sureties in like sum; and adjourned to April 1 for hearing.
