Brendan Rodgers has warned Liverpool will not be content to settle for fourth place as he insisted they can keep pace in the title race.
Liverpool have given themselves an outstanding chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League and their consistency has left them six points off table-toppers Arsenal.
The main ambition within Anfield at the start of the campaign was to reclaim their place in Europe’s elite competition and, if they were to do that, the efforts of Rodgers and his players would be deemed a huge success.
Rodgers, however, believes Liverpool can justifiably aim higher and maintains it would be a mistake to discount his side from 'the conversation' that will take place in spring to determine who will win the Barclays Premier League
‘Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are based around Champions League squads,’ Rodgers said. ‘They have been religiously in there and they have got a lot of depth that they can call upon.
‘But we know that if we have got the fortune to stay clear of injury and what not, I would put our team up against anyone. I would never give up the fight. Of course, the challenge is to get to fourth.
‘Once you can do that, it is all about seeing if you can go beyond that. But I will never give up the fight. With the games we have got to go and the confidence we have, we just need a bit of luck with injuries and to be able to manage the team.’
Rodgers is set to meet Liverpool’s owners John W Henry and Tom Werner, who have travelled to Merseyside for Saturday’s game with Aston Villa.
‘We have regular contact anyway,’ said Rodgers. ‘We will go for a meal and see where we are at, talk about many things as we always do. There is no motive for their visit other than just seeing where we are. They have a vision and strategy.’
